Ngày 26 tháng 10 năm 1955, hiến pháp đầu tiên của Việt Nam Cộng Hòa ban hành sau cuộc trưng cầu dân ý. Ngô Đình Diệm trở thành vị tổng thống dân cử đầu tiên của một nước Việt Nam độc lập, tự do, dân chủ.
